Your Review Plan
Complete these four stages to quickly refresh the essential ideas and confirm you're ready to continue.
4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
1. A measure of thermal state: _____. 2. Energy transferred because temperatures differ: _____. 3. A condition with equal temperatures and no net thermal transfer: _____.
Reveal Answers
1. temperature 2. heat 3. thermal expansion
Why it works: The three terms name a state variable, an energy-transfer process, and the final no-net-transfer condition.
Ready to refresh the essentials?
Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Thermal Expansion
Temperature Change and Size
Most materials expand when heated and contract when cooled. The temperature change is ΔT = Tfinal − Tinitial. A positive ΔT usually gives a positive change in size; a negative ΔT gives contraction.
The change is small, but it matters in bridges, railroad tracks, glassware, pipes, and expansion measurements.

Confidence Check
You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Predict the Energy Transfer
Answer all three without notes.
A metal spoon at 45 °C is placed in water at 20 °C. What happens before thermal expansion is reached?
Reveal Answers
Heat transfers from the warmer spoon to the cooler water. Net transfer ends when they have the same temperature.
Why it works: A temperature difference sets the direction; thermal expansion removes that difference.
Ready for your next step?
