Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

For A = 5 î - 2 ĵ + 4 k̂, identify the scalar components and the role of each unit vector.

Reveal Answers

Cosine gives the x-component and sine gives the y-component for an angle measured from +x.

Why it works: The x-component is adjacent to the angle and the y-component is opposite.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Basis Components

A vector is represented by scalar components multiplying basis unit vectors. In Cartesian coordinates, î, ĵ, and k̂ form orthogonal unit directions. The same component idea applies to vector-valued functions and derivatives.

A = Ax î + Ay ĵ + Az k̂; |A| = √(Ax² + Ay² + Az²)

Example: A = 2 î - 3 ĵ + 6 k̂ has magnitude 7.

Sensei note: Components depend on the chosen coordinate basis even though the geometric vector does not.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Three-Dimensional Magnitude

Answer all three without notes.

Find |A| for A = 2 î - 6 ĵ + 3 k̂.

Reveal Answers

|A| = 7.

Why it works: √(22+(-6)2+32)=√(49)=7.
