Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

Without calculating, state what happens to an object's motion when all external forces balance. Then name the law that explains it.

Reveal Answers

Balanced forces give zero net force and no acceleration.

Why it works: Start with the net external force, then connect it to acceleration or momentum change.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Newton's Laws: One Motion Framework

Newton's laws connect forces to changes in motion. Balanced forces do not change velocity; unbalanced forces produce acceleration. Interaction forces occur in pairs on different objects.

Net force causes acceleration; more net force means more acceleration, while more mass means less acceleration for the same net force.

Example: Use the net external force on one chosen object.

Sensei note: Zero net force does not mean no forces; forces can balance.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Net-Force Check

Answer all three without notes.

A hockey puck moves at constant speed in a straight line. What can you conclude about the net external force?

Reveal Answers

The net external force is zero. Constant velocity is consistent with Newton's first law.

Why it works: Apply the net-force rule to the chosen object.
