Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Electric Field Meaning and Direction

An electric field describes how a source-charge arrangement affects space. At each point, the field points in the direction a positive test charge would be pushed. Positive source charges produce outward fields; negative source charges produce inward fields.

Electric field direction is defined as the direction a positive test charge would accelerate.

Example: At a point to the right of a negative source charge, the electric field points left, toward the charge.

Sensei note: Do not confuse the field with the force on a particular test charge.
