Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

Match each idea to its meaning: capacitor; capacitance; dielectric. Then state what happens to capacitance when plate area increases, plate spacing increases, or a dielectric is inserted.

Reveal Answers

Key points: Capacitance connects charge separation and voltage.

Why it works: A capacitor stores equal and opposite charge on separated conductors. Capacitance tells how effectively the geometry and material store charge for a given potential difference. Larger plate area and dielectric material increase capacitance; greater spacing decreases it.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Capacitance connects charge separation and voltage

A capacitor stores equal and opposite charge on separated conductors. Capacitance tells how effectively the geometry and material store charge for a given potential difference. Larger plate area and dielectric material increase capacitance; greater spacing decreases it.

• More plate area → larger C
More plate spacing → smaller C

Example: Larger plate area → larger capacitance; larger spacing → smaller capacitance.

Sensei note: Do not say a capacitor “stores charge” as if net charge appears from nowhere; it separates equal and opposite charge.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

One-Minute Check

Answer all three without notes.

Two otherwise identical parallel-plate capacitors are compared. One has twice the plate area. Which has the larger capacitance, and by what factor?

Reveal Answers

The capacitor with twice the area has twice the capacitance.

Why it works: For a parallel-plate capacitor, capacitance is directly proportional to plate area.
