Warm-Up Check

Before you begin, take a moment to see what you already remember. Do not worry about getting everything right. This is only a starting point.

ACTIVITY 1

Warm-Up 1

Answer before revealing the response.

In one sentence, distinguish velocity from acceleration.

Reveal Answers

Velocity describes how position changes; acceleration describes how velocity changes.

Why it works: Connect the motion statement to the net external force or interaction pair.

ACTIVITY 2

Warm-Up 2

Answer before revealing the response.

True or false: an object moving to the right must have a net force to the right. Explain.

Reveal Answers

False. Constant rightward velocity can occur with zero net force.

Why it works: Connect the motion statement to the net external force or interaction pair.

ACTIVITY 3

Warm-Up 3

Answer before revealing the response.

A person pushes on a wall. Identify the interaction pair.

Reveal Answers

Person pushes wall; wall pushes person with equal magnitude in the opposite direction.

Why it works: Connect the motion statement to the net external force or interaction pair.

Core Concepts

Reinforce the two highest-leverage relationships, then use them in representative situations.

KEY CONCEPT 1

Net Force and Newton's First/Second Laws

Balanced forces do not change velocity; unbalanced forces produce acceleration. Newton's first law is the zero-net-force case, and the second law describes the effect of a nonzero net force.

An object keeps its velocity unless a net external force changes it.

Example: Check the net force on one object before deciding how motion changes.

Sensei note: Constant velocity does not require rest.

KEY CONCEPT 2

Newton's Third Law: Interaction Pairs

Third-law forces come from one interaction and act on two different objects. Because they act on different objects, they do not cancel on one object's force diagram.

Net force causes acceleration; more net force means more acceleration, while more mass means less acceleration for the same net force.

Example: Use object labels on interaction forces.

Sensei note: Weight and normal are not a third-law pair.

Guided Practice

Apply the reinforced ideas to two representative situations, then use the strategy card to check your setup.

PRACTICE 1

Practice 1

Solve and justify your Newton's-law reasoning.

A crate is pushed right while friction acts left; the push is larger. Predict the acceleration direction.

Reveal Answers

The net force is rightward, so the crate accelerates rightward.

Why it works: Isolate the object, determine the net force, then connect it to motion.

PRACTICE 2

Practice 2

Solve and justify your Newton's-law reasoning.

A swimmer pushes water backward. Identify the third-law partner force.

Reveal Answers

The water pushes the swimmer forward with an equal-magnitude opposite-direction force.

Why it works: Isolate the object, determine the net force, then connect it to motion.

Confidence Check

You've rebuilt the key ideas and practiced them with guidance. Now try these short questions on your own to check your understanding before moving on.

QUICK CHECK 1

Newton's Laws Check 1

Solve and justify your conclusion.

A car moves at constant velocity. Can external forces be present and balanced?

Reveal Answers

Yes. Constant velocity requires zero net force, not zero individual forces.

Why it works: Use the correct object and distinguish net-force effects from third-law pairs.

QUICK CHECK 2

Newton's Laws Check 2

Solve and justify your conclusion.

Why do third-law forces not cancel on one object?

Reveal Answers

They act on different objects.

Why it works: Use the correct object and distinguish net-force effects from third-law pairs.

How did it go?

Summary

Before moving on, take one final look at the essential ideas you’ll want to remember.

KEY TAKEAWAY 1

Key Takeaway 1

Zero net force means no change in velocity.

KEY TAKEAWAY 2

Key Takeaway 2

Net external force determines acceleration or momentum change.
