4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
If the momentum of an object is constant in time, what does Newton's second law imply about the net external force?
Reveal Answers
a = d𝐯/dt = 0 and therefore ∑𝐅 = 0.
Why it works: Start with the net external force, then connect it to acceleration or momentum change.
Ready to refresh the essentials?
Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Newton's Laws: One Motion Framework
The net external force is the time rate of change of momentum. For constant mass this becomes mass times acceleration.
∑𝐅 = d𝐩/dt; for constant mass, ∑𝐅 = m d𝐯/dt = m𝐚
Example: Use the net external force on one chosen object.
Sensei note: Zero net force does not mean no forces; forces can balance.

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Net-Force Check
Answer all three without notes.
A particle has p(t) = (3t² i + 2 j) kg·m/s. Find the net force at t = 2.0 s.
Reveal Answers
F = dp/dt = (6t i) N; at 2.0 s, F = 12 i N.
Why it works: Apply the net-force rule to the chosen object.
