4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
A motion has a horizontal displacement of 6 m and a vertical displacement of 8 m. Write the displacement as an ordered pair and identify which component is larger.
Reveal Answers
⟨6, 8⟩ m; the vertical component is larger.
Why it works: A two-dimensional vector is represented by its perpendicular x- and y-components.

Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
One motion, two component descriptions
In two dimensions, describe the same motion with a horizontal component and a vertical component. The components are not two different motions; together they specify one vector change. Work with each axis separately, then combine the results when you need the overall displacement or direction.
Δr = ⟨Δx, Δy⟩
Example: If Δx = 6 m and Δy = 8 m, the displacement is ⟨6, 8⟩ m. The vertical component is larger, so the displacement points more upward than sideways.
Sensei note: Do not add horizontal and vertical components as ordinary numbers. They represent perpendicular directions.

Confidence Check
You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Component displacement
Answer all three without notes.
An object moves 5 m east and 2 m south. Write its displacement as an ordered pair using east as +x and north as +y.
Reveal Answers
⟨5, −2⟩ m.
Why it works: East is positive x; south is negative y, so the signed component pair is ⟨5, −2⟩ m.
