Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

State the two graphical rules: how do you add two vectors, and how do you subtract one vector from another?

Reveal Answers

Add by placing vectors head-to-tail. Subtract by reversing the vector being subtracted and then adding.

Why it works: Both rules preserve direction and make the resultant represent the net directed change.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Add Head-to-Tail; Subtract by Reversing

A vector sum gives the net change produced by two directed quantities. Place the second vector’s tail at the first vector’s head; the resultant runs from the first tail to the final head. For subtraction, reverse the vector being subtracted, then add it.

A⃗ + B⃗ = R⃗ • A⃗ − B⃗ = A⃗ + (−B⃗)

Example: Walk 6 m east, then 2 m west. The resultant displacement is 4 m east.

Sensei note: Do not subtract only the lengths. Direction is part of every vector.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Resultant Direction Check

Answer all three without notes.

A 5 N vector points east and a 3 N vector points west. What is their resultant?

Reveal Answers

2 N east.

Why it works: The vectors oppose each other, so the smaller westward vector reduces the larger eastward vector.
