Complete these four stages to quickly refresh the essential ideas and confirm you're ready to continue.
4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
Recall: a vector has size and direction. For a vector 10 units long at 30° above +x, identify which component uses cosine and which uses sine.
Reveal Answers
Cosine gives the x-component and sine gives the y-component for an angle measured from +x.
Why it works: The x-component is adjacent to the angle and the y-component is opposite.
Ready to refresh the essentials?
Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Components from Magnitude and Angle
A vector can be split into perpendicular x- and y-components. The components tell how much of the vector points along each axis. Unit vectors î and ĵ name the positive x- and y-directions.
Ax = A cos θ; Ay = A sin θ; A = Ax î + Ay ĵ
Example: For A = 10 at 30°: Ax = 8.66 and Ay = 5.00.
Sensei note: Choose component signs from the direction of the vector, not from the calculator result alone.

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Component Sign Check
Answer all three without notes.
A vector points up and left. What signs must Ax and Ay have?
Reveal Answers
Ax is negative and Ay is positive.
Why it works: Left corresponds to -x and up corresponds to +y.
