Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

What angle appears in the work formula, and what two directions define that angle?

Reveal Answers

It is the angle between the force and displacement vectors.

Why it works: Only the component of force along the displacement contributes to work.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Work Uses the Force Component Along Displacement

For a constant force, work depends on force magnitude, displacement, and the angle between the force and displacement. The cosine selects the component of force parallel to the displacement.

W = Fd cos θ

Example: A 20 N force acts through 3 m at 60°. The work is (20)(3)cos 60° = 30 J.

Sensei note: Use the angle between the force vector and the displacement vector, not an angle measured from some unrelated axis.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Apply the Work Formula

Answer all three without notes.

A 50 N force acts through 4 m at 120° to the displacement. What is the work done by this force?

Reveal Answers

-100 J. The cosine of 120° is -0.5, so the work is (50)(4)(-0.5).

Why it works: An obtuse angle gives a negative cosine, so the force removes energy through negative work.
