QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
For a variable force, what mathematical operation replaces simple multiplication of force by displacement?
Reveal Answers
Integrate the force component along the displacement over the path.
Why it works: Integration sums the infinitesimal work contributions along the path.

Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this topic. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Work Is the Integral of Force Along the Path
When force varies with position, work is accumulated over the path. The dot product keeps only the component of force tangent to the displacement, and integration adds the small contributions.
W = ∫ F · dr
Example: For one-dimensional motion, the work from x = a to x = b is the area under the F-versus-x curve, including sign.
Sensei note: Do not integrate force magnitude alone when force and displacement are not parallel; the dot product controls the contributing component.

Answer all three without notes.
A one-dimensional force is F(x) = 3x² N from x = 0 to x = 2 m. What is the work done?
Reveal Answers
8 J. The integral of 3x² from 0 to 2 is x³ evaluated from 0 to 2.
Why it works: The definite integral gives the signed area under the force-position curve.
