Your Review Plan
Complete these four stages to quickly refresh the essential ideas and confirm you're ready to continue.
4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
If Q(t) = 3t2 C (t in seconds), find I(t).
Reveal Answers
I(t) = dQ/dt = 6t A (t measured in seconds).
Why it works: Instantaneous current is the time derivative of charge: I(t) = dQ/dt. Differentiating 3t2 gives 6t; with charge in coulombs and time in seconds, the result is in amperes.
Ready to refresh the essentials?
Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Instantaneous current and charge
Instantaneous current is I(t) = dQ/dt. The charge transported during an interval is ΔQ = ∫ I(t) dt over the chosen time interval. Current is signed relative to the selected surface normal.
Example: For I(t) = (2t) A with t in seconds, charge transported from 0 to 3 s is 9 C.
Sensei note: Average current is not automatically equal to the instantaneous current at an endpoint.

Confidence Check
You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Derivative sign
Answer all three without notes.
Q(t) = (5 − t2) C with t in seconds. Find I at t = 2 s.
Reveal Answers
I = dQ/dt = −2t A; at t = 2 s, I = −4 A relative to the chosen orientation.
Why it works: Current is the derivative dQ/dt, not charge divided by time at one instant. Differentiating 5 − t2 gives −2t A; the negative sign at 2 s indicates flow opposite the chosen positive orientation.
