Your Review Plan
Complete these four stages to quickly refresh the essential ideas and confirm you're ready to continue.
4 Stages • Approximately 5–10 minutes.
Quick Recall
Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.
QUICK RECALL
Recall Activity
Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.
Write one everyday example of each mode and state what carries the energy.
Reveal Answers
Conduction, convection, radiation.
Why it works: The three modes are distinguished by contact/gradient, bulk fluid motion, and electromagnetic radiation.
Ready to refresh the essentials?
Great! Now let's review the most important ideas you'll want to remember.
Essential Idea
Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.
ESSENTIAL IDEA
Three Modes of Heat Transfer
Heat can move by conduction, convection, or radiation. Identify the mode by asking whether energy crosses through matter by contact, by bulk fluid motion, or by electromagnetic waves.
Conduction: faster with larger temperature difference and better conductors. Convection: heat carried by moving fluid. Radiation: no material medium required.
Example: Conduction: spoon in soup • Convection: circulating warm air • Radiation: warmth from the Sun.
Sensei note: Do not call every transfer through air convection; radiation can also cross air.

Confidence Check
You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.
CONFIDENCE CHECK
Heat Transfer Check
Answer all three without notes.
Name the mode that dominates (1) through a solid wall, (2) in a circulating fluid, and (3) across a vacuum.
Reveal Answers
(1) conduction; (2) convection; (3) radiation.
Why it works: Each situation identifies the mechanism that transports energy.
