Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

Complete the ideas: temperature change within one phase uses Q = ____; a phase change at the transition temperature uses Q = ____.

Reveal Answers

Temperature change: Q = mcΔT. Phase change: Q = mL.

Why it works: The first changes temperature within a phase; the second accounts for latent heat during a change of phase.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Phase Change Energy: Latent Heat

During melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation, or deposition, energy is used to rearrange matter between phases. For a pure substance at fixed pressure, the temperature can remain nearly constant during the transition. The phase-change energy depends on mass and latent heat.

Q = mL; use Lf for solid↔liquid and Lv for liquid↔gas.

Example: For 0.10 kg of ice melting with Lf = 334 kJ/kg, Q = 33.4 kJ is absorbed.

Sensei note: Do not use Q = mcΔT for the phase-change plateau itself.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Latent Heat Check

Answer all three without notes.

Water vapor condenses to liquid at its transition temperature. Which relation applies, and is energy absorbed or released?

Reveal Answers

Use Q = mLv for the magnitude. Condensation releases energy to the surroundings.

Why it works: Condensation is a liquid↔gas phase change, so Lv applies; the reverse of vaporization releases energy.
