Quick Recall

Let's quickly refresh what you already know. These short recall activities will help you bring the most important ideas back to mind before reviewing them.

QUICK RECALL

Recall Activity

Complete the three statements from memory before revealing the answer.

What is the difference between stress and strain?

Reveal Answers

Stress is applied force per area, while strain is the fractional deformation produced by that stress.

Why it works: The distinction matters because stress tells you about the loading and strain tells you about the material response.

Essential Idea

Take one last look at the most important concept from this unit. If you remember this idea, the rest will come back much more easily.

ESSENTIAL IDEA

Stress and strain describe how materials respond to force

Stress measures how concentrated the applied force is on a material, while strain measures the resulting fractional change in size. In the elastic region, stress is proportional to strain, so the material returns to its original shape when the load is removed.

Normal stress σ = F/A, strain ε = ΔL/L, and for elastic deformation σ = Eε.

Example: If a 2.0 m wire stretches by 1.0 mm, its strain is ε = 0.0010/2.0 = 5.0×10^-4.

Sensei note: Keep units straight. Stress is in pascals (N/m^2), while strain is dimensionless.

Confidence Check

You've refreshed the essential ideas. Now answer this quick confidence check to confirm you're ready to move on.

CONFIDENCE CHECK

Can you predict how much an object stretches?

Answer all three without notes.

A longer rod made of the same material and area is pulled with the same force. Compared with a shorter rod, does it stretch more, less, or the same?

Reveal Answers

It stretches more because ΔL = FL/(AE), so extension grows in direct proportion to the original length.

Why it works: The same stress can produce a larger total elongation when it acts across a longer distance.
